  1. Describe an event in your life when some awesome plans went awesomely wrong: a ruined vacation, bad date, failed home repair, cooking disaster.
  2. How did you (or those around you) react in the moment?
  3. Looking back, are you different today because of that experience?




  1. CONSIDER: The video actually shows Derek Redmond’s second Olympic failure. He had previously competed in the 1988 Olympics four years earlier, where he was forced to withdraw 10 minutes before a race due to an injury. Besides obviously running while injured, how is our theme “Playing Hurt” reflected in his story?
  2. What are some of the ways you have seen people around you cope with hurt, failure, or trouble? Do you know people who have quit or given up?
  3. Paul, who wrote many of the books in the New Testament, traveled around the country telling people about Jesus. Read 2 Corinthians 11:21b-27 where he describes some of his life experiences. How would you describe his situations?
  4. Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10. According to Paul, what is the secret to “playing hurt”?
  5. The bigger question though, is Why? Read 2 Corinthians 4:15-18. Why should we keep going, or “play hurt”?  What do you think verse 15 means?


  1. How are you doing in your “race” (sprinting, a marathon, where’s the finish line, in the wrong lane…)?
  2. Have you ever experienced a time when you saw God work through difficult times? Share with the group.
  3. If you’re going through a difficult time or struggling with pain or suffering, let your group know. Take time to pray for each other.
