THROTTLE UP

  • Read 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.  How do you think people are able to find gratitude within their circumstances?

  • Read Luke 16:19-24. How do the lives of the rich man and Lazarus compare on earth?  How about after death?

  • Finish reading Luke 16 through verse 31.  From this story, what is the determining factor for entry into heaven?  Why do you think Jesus used a poor man to illustrate this and a rich man to represent those qualities that prevent one from entering heaven?

  • In Luke 16: 27-28, the rich man makes a request.  What does this say about how his views may have changed?

  • What does verse 31 show us about human nature? Why is it so difficult for people to be convinced of God's ways?

CHECK THE MIRRORS

  • On a scale of 1 to 10 (the rich man and his brothers a "1", and Lazarus a "10") where do you stand?  Why do you place yourself there?

  • How might you move closer to a 10?

  • How do you feel about discussing the issue of "the Judgment" with friends?  Why?

The Day The Earth Ends - Week 2

HOW WILL JESUS RETURN?

  • Can you remember a time when your mom or dad promised you something (a fishing trip, a special present, a ball game) and then they didn't deliver?  How did that make you feel?

  • When you were told, "Wait until your birthday" or "Christmas isn't here yet" and "You'd better be good until then", how did that effect your behavior in the meantime?

THROTTLE UP

  • Read 2 Peter 3:1-16.  What frustrations does God's patience produce?

  • How is God's patience a benefit?

  • How does God's view of time differ from ours?

  • Considering Peter's words, is he addressing the certainty, the timing, or the manner of Christ's coming?  In what ways are these passages an effective inducement to godly living now?

  • Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.  What emotions or feelings do the words about Christ coming as a "thief in the night" stir up inside you?

CHECK THE MIRRORS

  • Who has influenced you positively for godly living?  How so?  How can you be more like that person for the sake of someone else this week?

  • Does the reality of Christ's return encourage or threaten you?  How so?

  • How does this passage help you as you consider your own end of times?

KICK START

  •  What is your favorite disaster movie?

  • If a meeting begins at 7:00pm, do you get there at 6:45? 7:05? Or, do you plan to leave the house at 7:00pm, hoping everyone else will be late?

  • What does punctuality mean to you? Is it important? Why or why not?

THROTTLE UP

  • Read Matthew 24.  How does the parable in Matthew 25 relate to Matthew 24?

  • In what ways were the ten girls alike? Different?

  • What unexpected event takes place?

  • What were the embarrassing consequences of the event(s)?

  • What do you think is the point of this parable?  Why is readiness so important to the second coming?

CHECK THE MIRRORS

  • Where will you be standing at the final wedding banquet?

  • What is the "oil" that keeps your lamp lit?

  • Who are you most like in this story?  Why?
